Baron Samedi is a central figure in the Voodoo pantheon, known as the Lord of the Dead and Guardian of the Graves. He is traditionally depicted with a black top hat, dark clothing, white-painted face, and often with a cigar. Baron Samedi symbolizes death, transformation, but also humor and the joy of life, and is both feared and revered. In visual art and photography, he serves as inspiration for dark fashion, fantasy and horror productions, in which models are depicted as supernatural, mystical or sacred figures.
