The term green screen refers to a special technique from photo and video production, in which a green-colored background is used as a neutral replacement in order to replace it later in digital post-processing with another image or a desired scene. This process is part of chroma keying, in which the green area is automatically recognized and removed by software.
In photography, the green screen allows models and objects to be seemingly placed in any environment, landscape, or fantasy world without them having to be physically present on set. Especially in creative areas such as fantasy or dark fashion shoots, this technique is used to create visual worlds that are difficult to realize in the studio.
The color green is chosen because it is the furthest from the skin tone of most people and is therefore particularly well suited for digital isolation.
