The term “artificial blood” refers to a photographic and visual prop specifically used in fantasy, dark, and horror photography. In photographs of young, adult men, artificial blood serves to portray roles such as vampires, demons, or werewolves convincingly, dramatically, and atmospherically, without creating real injuries or dangers. As a stylistic device, artificial blood is used deliberately to create drama, transformation, and narrative depth. It can be used sparingly as an accent (e.g., on the corners of the mouth, hands, or clothing) or intentionally more intensely for cinematic effects. In combination with appropriate makeup, lighting, props such as claws or fangs, and corresponding body language, powerful visual worlds are created that lie somewhere between myth, dark fantasy, and aesthetic horror.
