Chroma keying is a film and photography technique in which a monochrome background – usually green (greenscreen) or blue (bluescreen) – is removed by digital post-processing and replaced with another image or video. This technique makes it possible to seemingly place models or objects in any environment, fantasy world, or visual scenario without them having to be physically present.
In photography, chroma keying is particularly used when complex backgrounds or visual effects are desired that would be difficult to implement on set. With the appropriate software, photographers can isolate the models from the original background and place them in front of digital backdrops, landscapes, or artistic compositions.
Especially in areas such as fantasy, dark fashion, or thematic shoots, chroma keying opens up the possibility of creating extraordinary visual worlds that go beyond classic studio backdrops.
